Passover Events & Services

Finding the Right Haggadah
April 1st at 7:30pm

Fill out the Hametz form!
Due at 10:00am on Friday, April 11th

The Torah instructs us that during Passover, no Jew may possess hametz: storing it away is not sufficient. The Rabbis recognized that many people would suffer great economic loss if they destroyed all the hametz in their possession; so they proposed the idea of the sale of the hametz to a non-Jew, who would own it until after the holiday.

Fill out the form below by 10:00am on Friday, April 11th so Rabbi Daniel can sell your hametz to Mayor Jay Moran. You can mail the form to the office or email it to programming@myshul.org

Copies are avaiable in the lobby or you can print it by clicking here

First-Born Service:
Why Fast When You Don’t Have to?

Thursday, April 1oth at 8:00am, Rabbi's teaching & breakfast at 8:45am

Traditionally, the first born of a family fasts on the day before (Erev) Pesach in commemoration of the survivors and victims of the Exodus from Egypt.  It has become customary after morning prayers on that day to hold a Siyyum, a celebration of the completion of a piece of sacred text. The Siyyum overrides the fast which then allows all firstborn in attendance to eat.

At Home

B’dikat Hametz, The Search for Leaven
Thursday, April 10th after sundown

After the house has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared for Pesach, we search again for any crumbs that may have been missed; this serves as an educational ritual. Several pieces of hametz are “planted” around the house and then “found.” This is done in a ritualistic manner utilizing a feather, a wooden spoon, and a candle. The prayers to precede and follow the search may be found in your Haggadah. Be sure to include your children or grandchildren in this fun ritual.

Bekidat hametz is done on Thursday night April 10th. The next morning, Friday April 11, we take the found hametz and burn it as a final act of removal (since one is not allowed to have in their possession any leaven during the holiday). There will be a communal burning of chametz at the synagogue after the breakfast Friday morning.
